The Uganda
Travel Guide

Everything you need to know about Uganda โ€” from gorilla trekking permits to the best time to visit, national parks, packing lists, and practical travel advice from people who live here.

Why Uganda Is
Africa's Best Kept Secret

Uganda has more primate species than any country on earth. More bird species than the entire continent of Europe. The source of the world's longest river. Ancient rainforests that have been continuously forested for over 25,000 years. The most accessible mountain gorilla population in existence.

It also has gorilla permits that cost $800 โ€” less than half what Rwanda charges for an experience on the same mountain range, with the same gorilla families, in the same ancient forest. The difference is that fewer people know about Uganda. That is changing. Now is the time to come.

Uganda is also one of the safest countries in East Africa for tourists โ€” friendly, English-speaking, politically stable, with a government that has made wildlife tourism a genuine national priority.

Conservation Achievement

In 1989, fewer than 300 mountain gorillas remained alive. Today there are over 1,000 โ€” the only great ape whose population is actively growing. Tourism revenue, directed responsibly, funds the rangers who make this possible.

Peak Season

June โ€“ August

Uganda's main dry season. Best game viewing โ€” animals concentrate around water sources. Roads dry and accessible. Gorilla permit availability tightest โ€” book 4โ€“6 months ahead. Highest prices of the year.

Second Peak

December โ€“ January

Shorter dry season with excellent conditions. Good gorilla permit availability โ€” book 2โ€“3 months ahead. Popular with visitors combining Uganda with a Christmas/New Year holiday. Busy at lodges near Bwindi.

Best Value

September โ€“ November

The long rains begin in October. Roads to Bwindi can be challenging. But gorilla permits are readily available, birding is exceptional as migrants arrive, and lodge rates drop. Many experienced Uganda travelers consider October their favourite month to visit.

Jeff's honest advice: The gorilla trekking experience itself is essentially identical regardless of season โ€” gorillas are habituated to human presence year-round and are encountered every single day. The difference is the road to get there, not the experience when you arrive. If budget matters, travel in the shoulder season.

The Complete
Gorilla Trekking Guide

The Conservation Story

Mountain gorillas were on the edge of extinction within living memory. In 1989, fewer than 300 remained. Habitat destruction, poaching, and political instability in the Congo Basin had pushed them to the brink. Today, more than 1,000 mountain gorillas live in the wild โ€” the only great ape whose wild population is increasing. Conservation tourism is central to this story. The $800 gorilla permit funds the rangers who protect these families every day. When you trek gorillas, you are not just having an extraordinary experience. You are contributing to the most remarkable wildlife recovery in Africa.

The gorilla experience is the same mountain range, the same gorilla species, the same one-hour rule. The difference is the price you pay to do it.

Bwindi Sectors โ€” Which to Choose

Buhoma (North)

The original sector, most established infrastructure. Best mid-range and budget lodge selection. More habituated gorilla families. Good for first-time visitors.

Rushaga (South)

Home of the gorilla habituation experience ($1,500 โ€” 4 hours instead of 1). Multiple gorilla families. Growing lodge infrastructure including some luxury options.

Ruhija (East)

Highest altitude sector. Outstanding birding โ€” Albertine Rift endemic species. Fewer visitors. More challenging trek often rewarded with a more immersive forest experience.

Nkuringo (Southwest)

Dramatic landscape on the edge of the Congo border. Longer trek but extraordinary scenery. Best combined with Lake Bunyonyi for a scenic multi-day itinerary.

Key Rules โ€” Non-Negotiable

  • Minimum age: 15 years. No exceptions under any circumstances.
  • No trekking with respiratory symptoms โ€” gorillas have no immunity to human diseases.
  • Minimum distance: 7 metres from any gorilla at all times.
  • Maximum time with gorillas: 1 hour (habituation experience: 4 hours).
  • No flash photography. Natural light only near gorillas.
  • Hire a porter at the park gate โ€” $15, supports a local family, makes your hike easier.

Practical Uganda

๐ŸŽ’

Packing for Uganda

  • Long trousers and long-sleeved shirts (neutral colours)
  • Waterproof hiking boots with ankle support
  • Lightweight rain jacket or poncho
  • Insect repellent (DEET-based for malaria areas)
  • Reusable water bottle (no single-use plastic on Roamblr trips)
  • Gardening gloves (for gorilla trekking โ€” forest nettles)
  • Camera without flash capability
  • Power bank (electricity unreliable at remote lodges)
  • USD cash in clean notes printed after 2009
๐Ÿ“ฑ

Connectivity & SIM Cards

Uganda has good mobile coverage in Kampala and along main highways. Coverage drops significantly in national park areas โ€” Bwindi, Kidepo, and Murchison have very limited or no signal.

Best for tourists
MTN Uganda SIM
Available at Entebbe Airport arrivals. ~UGX 3,000. Data packages from UGX 10,000. Best network coverage.
Alternative
Airtel Uganda SIM
Good coverage in Kampala. Cheaper data packages. Less reliable in remote areas.

Roamblr clients: your driver-guide will have a working phone at all times. You can always reach us through them if you have no signal yourself.

๐Ÿฅ

Health & Safety

Mandatory

Yellow Fever Vaccination

Certificate required at Entebbe Airport entry. Get vaccinated at least 10 days before travel.

Strongly Recommended

Malaria Prophylaxis

All national park areas carry malaria risk. Consult your travel health doctor for appropriate prophylaxis โ€” Malarone, Doxycycline, or Lariam depending on your medical history.

Recommended

Hepatitis A, Typhoid

Both transmitted through food and water. Vaccination significantly reduces risk.

Emergency Medical

International Hospital Kampala

Best private hospital in Uganda. Full emergency care, international standard. Closest major hospital to Bwindi is Kabale (45 min). Travel insurance with evacuation cover essential.
