The minimum viable gorilla experience โ maximum impact. Kampala to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and back in three days. One hour with the mountain gorillas. Everything included.
Mountain gorillas share approximately 98% of human DNA. When you sit within seven metres of a silverback โ close enough to hear him breathe, to watch his family forage and play and rest around him โ the intellectual knowledge of that shared ancestry becomes something physical. Something felt. Every person who has done this comes back describing it the same way: the most extraordinary hour of my life.
The Gorilla Express is designed for the traveler who knows they need to experience this but has limited time. Three days. Two nights. Kampala to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and back. One gorilla trek in the morning mist of one of Africa's most ancient rainforests.
Everything is arranged. The permit ($800 โ less than half what Rwanda charges). The private vehicle. The certified driver-guide. Two nights at a quality lodge near the park gate. All meals. A community experience with the people whose conservation stewardship makes the gorilla population possible. You simply need to arrive at your Kampala hotel at 6am on Day 1.
This is the minimum viable gorilla experience. It delivers maximum impact.
Approximately 9โ10 hours driving ยท Arrivals dinner included
Your driver-guide collects you from your Kampala hotel. You will receive their name and vehicle details the evening before. Private vehicle โ no shared transport.
Stop at the equator monument near Masaka for breakfast and the equator crossing photo. A genuine geographic milestone that most tourists miss entirely.
Lunch in Kabale โ Uganda's highest town, surrounded by terraced hillsides that look more like Rwanda than the Uganda most visitors know. A brief walk through the market if time and interest allow.
Check in at your lodge. The forest begins metres from the gate. Your room overlooks the tree canopy. You will hear the forest before you sleep.
A guided walk through the villages surrounding the park with a community guide. Traditional medicine plants, banana beer demonstration, interaction with families whose daily life exists alongside the gorillas. This is your community tourism element โ included as standard in every Roamblr package.
Dinner at the lodge. Your driver-guide gives you the pre-trek briefing โ what to expect tomorrow morning, what to wear, what to bring. Early night recommended โ tomorrow begins at 7am.
The day you came to Uganda for
All trekkers report to UWA headquarters at the park gate. You are assigned to a gorilla family group based on your fitness level and preference. Each group has a maximum of eight trekkers. A UWA ranger briefs the group on gorilla etiquette and the rules โ seven-metre minimum distance, no flash photography, one hour maximum time with the family.
The hike to find the gorilla family varies from 30 minutes to 4+ hours depending on where the trackers have located the family that morning. The forest is ancient and extraordinarily dense โ tree ferns, strangler figs, giant lobelias. The sounds are entirely unlike anything you have heard before. Bring water, a snack, and your camera.
Your ranger signals that you have found them. The next sixty minutes are unlike anything you can prepare yourself for. A silverback weighing 180kg sitting within metres of you. Juveniles playing in the tree canopy. A mother nursing her infant. Entirely wild. Entirely habituated to human presence. Entirely extraordinary.
Return to the lodge for a late lunch and a long afternoon of doing very little โ reading, sitting on the lodge veranda watching the forest, talking about what you just witnessed. This afternoon exists for processing. It earns its place in the itinerary.
Final evening at Bwindi. The conversation over dinner between people who have just shared this experience is always extraordinary. Early night โ tomorrow is a long drive.
Approximately 9โ10 hours ยท Scenic return journey
Final breakfast at the lodge. Checkout by 9am. This is the unhurried morning โ one last look at the forest, a final cup of coffee on the veranda, the sounds of Bwindi before the vehicle engine starts.
The return journey follows a slightly different route through the highlands โ stopping at Lake Bunyonyi viewpoint (Uganda's most scenic lake, thirty small islands scattered across clear water) and at Kanungu town for the most remarkable roadside market you will see in Uganda.
Final lunch of the trip at a good Kabale restaurant. Your driver-guide will recommend the right place based on your food preferences.
Drop-off at your Kampala hotel. The trip is complete. The memory is not. You will find yourself talking about the gorillas for years.
Note on timing: The return journey can be adjusted if you have a late evening flight from Entebbe. Talk to us about your flight time when booking and we will plan accordingly โ an early morning flight is the only scenario that makes this a challenging tight connection.

Gorilla trekking is rated moderate to strenuous. You will be hiking on uneven, often steep terrain in a tropical rainforest. The hike to find the gorilla family can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 6 hours depending on where the trackers locate them that morning. You do not need to be an athlete, but you should be comfortable walking for several hours. If you have mobility limitations or health concerns, please discuss with us before booking โ some families are easier to reach than others and we can request appropriate assignment where possible.
We send you a complete packing list with your booking confirmation. The essentials:
If you arrive at the park gate with respiratory symptoms (cold, flu, cough), UWA regulations require that you do not trek that day. The gorilla permit is non-refundable. This is why we require evidence of travel insurance that covers gorilla permit cancellation โ some policies include this, many do not, so check your policy carefully. We will discuss this in detail during your pre-travel briefing. If you become unwell during the hike, your guide and a dedicated porter will assist you back to the trailhead safely.
Yes, with one constraint โ gorilla permits are date-specific. Once a permit is issued for a specific date, it cannot be used on a different date. This means date changes after permit booking incur the cost of a new permit ($800). Changes requested more than 30 days before travel with no permit yet booked carry only a small administration fee. We always book permits as late as possible while still securing your preferred date, to preserve your flexibility.
Add chimpanzee tracking in Kibale Forest to the gorilla experience. Uganda's ultimate primate journey.
Game drives and Nile boat cruise at Uganda's most dramatic national park. Add before or after gorillas.
Combine with the Gorilla Express for a 5-day itinerary visiting two parks. Stop at Lake Mburo en route to Bwindi.
