Game drives in Uganda's largest national park. The Nile squeezed through a seven-metre gorge at full force. A boat cruise to the base of the falls. Optional rhino tracking at Ziwa Ranch. Uganda's most dramatic safari landscape.
Murchison Falls is not the highest waterfall in Africa, or the widest. What it is โ what makes it genuinely unlike any other waterfall on the continent โ is the force. The entire volume of the White Nile, flowing north from Lake Albert, is compressed through a seven-metre-wide gap in the rock. The resulting explosion of water and sound and spray is one of the most dramatic natural spectacles in East Africa. The former President of Uganda called it the most powerful waterfall in the world by flow rate. He was not wrong.
Murchison Falls National Park surrounds this landmark with Uganda's finest traditional safari landscape โ open savannas, riverine forest, and the Nile itself, teeming with hippos, Nile crocodiles, and waterfowl in concentrations rarely seen elsewhere in Uganda. The game viewing here is everything you imagine when you picture East Africa: elephants at water, lions in the grass, giraffes browsing acacia canopy.
The package adds Ziwa Rhino Ranch en route โ the only place in Uganda where white rhinos roam in their natural environment. Tracking them on foot through the grassland with a ranger is a uniquely intimate wildlife encounter, and entirely different in character from the vehicle-based game drives that define the rest of the trip.
This is the package for anyone who loves classic East African safari combined with landscape spectacle. It is also the most accessible introduction to Uganda wildlife โ no minimum age, no specialist permits, no particularly demanding terrain.
Approximately 6โ7 hours total ยท Optional rhino tracking en route
Departure north from Kampala on the Gulu highway. The road passes through Nakaseke, Nakitoma, and the gradually changing landscape from fertile central Uganda to the more open terrain of the north.
Ziwa is the only place in Uganda where white rhinos roam free. Tracking them on foot with an armed ranger through open grassland โ close enough to hear them breathe, close enough to see the texture of their skin โ is one of the most unexpected wildlife encounters in East Africa. The tracking fee goes directly to the conservation programme. Strongly recommended if your fitness allows walking in light heat.
Stop for lunch in Masindi town โ a pleasant junction town with good local restaurants. The last significant town before the park.
Cross the Nile on the Paraa ferry and enter the north bank game viewing area. Afternoon game drive as the light turns golden. This is the hour when lions are most visible, when elephants come to the water, and when Uganda kob graze on the open savannas in numbers that take the breath away.
Check in and dinner at your Murchison lodge. The sounds of hippos from the Nile are audible from the terrace at night.
The two signature Murchison experiences
The most productive game viewing hours. Lions finishing nocturnal hunts. Elephants drinking at the Nile before retreating to the shade. The north bank circuit covers the best wildlife habitat in the park โ the Albert Nile floodplain, the savanna plateau, and the delta where the Nile meets Lake Albert.
Two hours at the lodge. Time to upload photographs, rest in the shade, and prepare for the afternoon.
The signature Murchison experience. A three-hour boat journey upriver from Paraa to the base of the falls. The banks are dense with hippos โ 450 at last count, one of the densest populations on the continent. Nile crocodiles basking on every exposed bank. African fish eagles calling from the acacia canopy. The boat slows as the roar becomes audible, then deafening. The falls emerge around the last bend. The volume of water, the noise, the spray โ all of it is genuinely overwhelming.
Hiking to the falls viewpoint ยท Second game drive
A short guided walk from the top of the falls viewpoint. Standing at the lip of the gorge, looking down at the entire Nile forcing itself through that seven-metre gap, is a completely different experience from yesterday's boat cruise โ quieter, more intimate, equally extraordinary. The spray creates a permanent rainbow in morning light.
Mid-morning heat in Murchison is significant in the dry season. A lodge-based rest period, swimming if available, a long lunch.
A second game drive exploring a different circuit โ the delta area, or the deeper savanna where cheetah and lion have their territories. Each drive reveals something different from the one before it. Murchison rewards repeat visits within the same trip.
Final evening at Murchison. The hippos will be audible again. The stars at this latitude, far from any city light pollution, are extraordinary.
Paraa ferry crossing ยท Masindi stopover
One last hour in the park before the return journey. Always worthwhile โ the morning light on the savanna and the animals' unhurried morning routines are the best of Murchison.
The Paraa ferry is itself an experience โ a flat-bottomed barge crossing the Nile with vehicles, local passengers, and occasional wildlife watching from the riverbank. A fitting farewell to Murchison.
Stop at the same or different Masindi restaurant on the return. Your driver-guide will recommend based on your preferences.
Drop-off at your Kampala hotel. Four nights, two game drives, a Nile boat cruise, a waterfall, optional rhinos, and a Uganda that most visitors never get north enough to find.
Add 2โ3 days ยท Charter from Pakuba airstrip
Murchison Falls is in northern Uganda โ closer to Kidepo Valley than any other safari destination. Charter a light aircraft from Pakuba airstrip (adjacent to your Murchison lodge) and add 2โ3 nights in Uganda's most remote and extraordinary national park. Kidepo is described by every serious Africa traveler who has been there as unlike anywhere else on the continent.
